The Ohio State University (OSU) seeks an experienced, strategic leader for the position of Assistant Vice-President for Health Sciences and Director of the OSU Health Sciences Library (HSL). The HSL supports the education, research, and clinical missions of one of the most comprehensive academic health sciences centers in the country. The library’s budget of more than $6M serves a primary customer base of more than 30,000 faculty, staff, and learners from five medical and health sciences colleges as well as all hospitals and biomedical research institutes. The HSL is staffed by 29 experienced librarians and technical professionals that provide services including research and education support and consultation, electronic collections, medical illustration and graphic design, consumer health information, educational technology resources, and historical medical collections and outreach programs.  Librarians at the HSL collaborate with experts at The Ohio State University Libraries and the Law Library to facilitate learner success and enhance the impact of all University education and research endeavors. This is a full-time, tenure-track faculty position with appointment in The Ohio State University Libraries. As such, this individual is required to meet University Libraries criteria for librarianship, scholarship, and service. Salary and faculty rank are dependent on experience and qualifications. Position reports directly to Dr. Daniel Clinchot, Vice Dean for Education, and Associate Vice President for Health Sciences Education. The Director leads all aspects of HSL operations including strategic planning, fiscal management, program development, and space management. Primary responsibilities for this role include:
  • Overall operation of the HSL, i.e., library services, operations and fiscal planning, supervision of the HSI- leadership and administration team;
  • Development and implementation of the library’s strategic plan that integrates with and advances the strategic goals of the Health Science Colleges and Medical Center.
  • Building and maintaining close relationships with senior leadership, faculty and staff administrators, student organization representatives, and library donors.
  • Active participation in administrative processes, such as strategy and policy development, budget and resource allocation, space planning and renovations, personnel decision-making, and exploration of internal and external customer needs and expectations;
  • Identification of external revenue sources to support new and ongoing programs, including grant funding, earnings operations, and development/philanthropy efforts
  • Growth and leadership of collaborative programs across teams within the health sciences community, the broader University, and with appropriate community partners.
  • Works closely with the OSU Dean of Libraries and Law Library Director and actively participates in OhioLINK, Big 10 Academic Alliance, and National Library of Medicine initiatives.
  • Active engagement on various medical center and university committees as well regional and national professional library and information organizations.
Qualifications for this role include: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent library and/or information science program, or an equivalent combination of a relevant terminal degree and demonstrated knowledge of and experience in health sciences libraries.
  • Minimum of 5-10 years of successful, leadership level roles in an academic research institution; preferably health or life sciences settings.
  • Commitment to exploring novel approaches to library research, education, and technology service offerings, as well as collection access, budget planning and fundraising, and space management.
  • Passion for excellence and a high level of energy and enthusiasm for meeting the needs and growing the success of health sciences learners, faculty, and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, motivate, and lead a collaborative, innovative, collegial team of skilled librarians, administrative staff, and creative technical professionals.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and group facilitation skills.
  • Evidence of ability and interest in working collaboratively and equitably with diverse staff and customers.
  • Knowledge of key issues, trends, and opportunities associated with academic libraries and educational technology services.
  • Demonstrated commitment and support of professional development and continuous improvement for library employees.
  • Established record of scholarly activities including research, publishing, teaching, and professional service.
