The University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) system is the largest academic library in Canada and is ranked third among peer institutions in North America, behind just Harvard and Yale. The system consists of 44 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of 215 graduate programs, over 60 professional programs, and more than 700 undergraduate degree programs. In addition to more than 12 million print volumes in 341 languages, the library system currently provides access to millions of electronic resources in various forms and over 29,554 linear metres of archival material. More than 150,000 new print volumes are acquired each year.  The Libraries data centre houses more than 200 servers with a storage capacity of 1.5 petabytes.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Associate Chief Librarian for Science Research and Information, the Research Data Management Librarian will lead the University of Toronto Libraries’ effort to expand and evolve RDM services to meet the needs of faculty and students at the University of Toronto. This newly created role is an excellent opportunity for a highly knowledgeable and skilled librarian to join a team of library specialists who are making a significant impact in this area of strategic importance to the libraries and the University. This librarian’s role will involve leadership for research data management, with an emphasis on health sciences. As part of the libraries’ Data Consultancy Service, this position will also work closely with the Map and Data Library and staff who are working in the areas of digital humanities, institutional repositories, metadata services, and digital preservation. 

The Research Data Management Librarian will have expert knowledge of the research data management landscape in Canada and abroad and have a strong understanding of policy, planning, technical and service issues related to RDM. The incumbent will interact with faculty, students, staff, university administrators and library colleagues in a complex organizational environment and will have the skills and abilities to develop and nurture connections across these stakeholder groups. 


The incumbent will:


·         Provide vision and leadership for research data management for the libraries and collaborate with scholars and administrative colleagues to develop and evolve research data management services across multiple disciplines at the University in a changing funding and technical landscape

·         Play a coordinating role in the libraries’ Research Data Management Working Group, collaborating with a team of librarians and library staff to plan, develop and provide RDM services that meet the needs of faculty and students

·         Deliver RDM services, including consultation and instruction, to faculty and students across disciplines, with a primary focus in the health sciences

·         In partnership with library colleagues, develop and maintain library orientation and instructional materials including tutorials, courses and guides related to RDM services

·         Working with metadata specialists, identify and promote research data description standards that support their discovery, curation, preservation and access management

·         Develop and report metrics that will help with planning and development of RDM services for the Libraries and for the institution 

·         Represent the libraries and proactively engage with the international community of scholars, librarians, technologists, funders and administrators in efforts to advance research data management practices that ensure the long-term preservation and stewardship for reuse of these important research materials 

Required Qualifications:

·         An ALA-accredited Master of Library or Information Science degree, or an acceptable equivalent

·         Relevant work experience in an academic setting

·         Expert knowledge of research data management issues across the entire research lifecycle

·         Working knowledge of metadata standards, ontologies and common data elements

·         Familiarity with capabilities of linked data and the Semantic Web

·         Active engagement in the scholarly discussions and experimentation taking place to address questions about long-term research data curation and preservation for reuse 

·         Proven understanding of scholarly communications and open access issues generally

·         Ability to work effectively with scholars with different needs and levels of experience to meet their research data management needs

·         Highly developed oral and written skills, particularly the ability to deliver presentations, develop learning and informational material, and build partnerships 

·         Proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and to lead in a collegial environment

·         Excellent organizational, time management, project management and problem-solving skills

·         Strategic and creative thinking skills and a proven knack for diplomacy

·         Experience working with digital repositories and content management systems 

·         Understanding of grant writing and funding agency requirements

Preferred Qualifications:

A degree or relevant subject knowledge in a health science or science discipline


Salary and Terms of Appointment:

This position is a continuing appointment (Permanent Status Stream) to be filled at either Librarian II or III level dependent upon qualifications.  We offer a highly attractive compensation and benefits package, with salary and appointment level based upon experience and qualifications.
