Associate Dean, User Services, Outreach and Assessment (USOA)

This position leads, shapes, and oversees the programs, strategies and staff that ensure a rich, satisfying library experience for all library users engaged in research, teaching and learning. The Associate Dean is a member of the Libraries' senior management team, which shares responsibility for planning, budget allocation, and the development and leadership of major strategic initiatives. In collaboration with senior management colleagues (including the Assoc./Asst. Deans for Collections and Research Services; Knowledge Access and Resource Management Services; Libraries Information Technology; Budget and Planning; Human Resources; and Digital Library Technology Services), the Associate Dean has primary leadership responsibility for a wide, holistic range of user services across NYU Libraries' integrated global system.

The Associate Dean shapes the vision and leads the staff for a broad portfolio of user services, including design and development of reference, instructional services, and access services; development of a wide and responsive array of reader spaces; ensuring effective electronic access and user experience; marketing and outreach; assessment; and integrated global services. The Associate Dean currently provides leadership, direction, planning and coordination of the following USOA departments: User Experience; Access, Delivery, and Resource Sharing Services (ADRSS); Avery Fisher Center for Music and Media; Business and Government Information Services; Reference Services; and Undergraduate, Instructional, and Global Services. The Associate Dean takes the leadership for ensuring the quality and integration of the NYU Abu Dhabi and Shanghai libraries with those in New York.

The Libraries' strategic plan emphasizes the need for continual organizational learning and innovation to meet the challenge of integrating library resources and services with new, ever-changing, powerful networked teaching, learning and research environments. Critical objectives led by the Associate Dean include: a satisfying, seamless user experience in the face of increasingly complex resource and system environments; major renovation projects and new services that demand creative new space configurations; fostering the Libraries' partnerships with teaching faculty in effective new modes of teaching and learning; successful outreach to students and faculty to enable their best use of an ever-growing array of services across NYU's global network; continual assessment, problem-solving and improvement to assure a match between library services and user expectations and goals. The Associate Dean develops strong relationships and partnerships across the University to design and implement effective and responsive programs. The Division of Libraries is in a continual mode of responsive, and forward looking, re-invention and re-tuning, and the Associate Dean plays the central role in identifying and interpreting the most important use trends and user perceptions and needs.

NYU is one of the larger members of the Association of Research Libraries, with 319

FTE staff (63 of whom are faculty librarians). Librarians responded to 97,000 reference queries in the last year, including via 24-hour cross-globe virtual reference. Librarians reached 20,000 attendees through instructional sessions, and thousands more through orientations and similar events. Currently USOA staff comprises 15

librarians (who are faculty), 26 administrative staff (which includes supervisors, reference associates, and administrators) and 31 support staff, as well as 34 FTE of student/casuals and adjunct librarians. In addition, the Associate Dean oversees the reference and instructional role of the Libraries subject and specialized service liaisons.

Libraries: Library facilities at New York University serve a large and diverse population of 40,000 students and faculty across 18 schools and colleges-- including, for example, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Tisch School of the Arts, the Stern School of Business, the Meyer College of Nursing, the Wagner School of Public Administration, NYU Abu Dhabi

and NYU Shanghai, etc.-- and from every U.S. state and more than 133 countries. NYU is one of the largest private universities in the U. S., and is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU). New York University Libraries is a member of the Association of Research Libraries, the HathiTrust, the Manhattan Research Libraries Initiative, the Research Libraries Group Partnership of OCLC, the Digital Preservation Network, and the Digital Library Federation, as well as regional resource sharing consortia. The Libraries also serves as the administrative headquarters of the Research Library Association of South Manhattan, a consortium that includes New School and Cooper Union. Substantial demonstrated leadership experience in an academic/research library with a particular expertise in the delivery of user-centered public services; strong service orientation and knowledge of user needs for teaching, learning and research coupled with a knowledge of trends, issues and methods of intellectual access to library resources; and operational knowledge of discovery and access methods and systems. Successful managerial and supervisory experience equivalent to the departmental head level with

demonstrated ability to lead staff through organizational change. Excellent communications and interpersonal skills; excellent administrative, management, planning, and organizational skills. Experience in assessment. Evidence of effective interaction with faculty and understanding of fundamental research issues/processes of research. Evidence of creative problem-solving and innovative, results-oriented approaches to processes and organizational development; and commitment to and support for an inclusive, diverse environment. Exposure to international and multi-cultural educational environments is desirable.

MLIS from an ALA-accredited program required; second master's degree in an academic

discipline required for tenure eligibility.
