Dean of University Libraries

University of Vermont

Burlington, Vermont

The University of Vermont (UVM), one of the nation’s top 50 public research universities, invites expressions of interest and nominations for the position of Dean of University Libraries. The University is seeking a talented and experienced library leader who will continue to develop outstanding services to support the University community and advance the critical role of the UVM Libraries in pedagogy and research on campus. The Dean reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President of the University, is the chief administrative officer for the University Libraries and sits on the University Council of Deans.

UVM is one of the nation’s premier small public research universities and the only high research activity university in Vermont. Enrolling close to 13,000 students, including more than 10,500 undergraduate and 1,500 graduate students, 450 medical students, 22 post-baccalaureate certificate students, and 720 non-degree students, the University combines the teaching and faculty-student relationships typically found at a liberal arts college with the scholarship and resources of a major research institution. Its single campus is home to seven undergraduate schools and colleges, an honors college, graduate college, medical school, and a division of continuing and distance education. UVM has attracted an increasingly distinguished faculty and has a growing research enterprise, with $136M of sponsored projects in fiscal year 2018. The campus spans Burlington’s highest ridgeline overlooking Lake Champlain, between the Adirondack and Green Mountains, and is surrounded by the small, historic city of Burlington, perennially voted one of America's best places to live.

The Dean of University Libraries at UVM will oversee a library faculty and staff of 88 and average annual expenditures of approximately $16M. Overseeing the operation of the three distinctive libraries on campus and their remote storage facilities, the Dean leads planning, administration, fundraising, and human resource efforts to further sustain and improve library operations and services. The next Dean of University Libraries will provide visionary strategic leadership for the Libraries and will cultivate and strengthen partnerships between the UVM Libraries and its constituencies on campus. It is crucial that the Dean be a strong advocate for the Libraries at the university level as well as externally and communicates and demonstrates the Libraries’ value to its stakeholders in the community. The Dean will also develop and inspire a strong, loyal and service-oriented staff while effectively leveraging and growing the Libraries’ fiscal resources.

UVM seeks an individual who exhibits strong and inspiring leadership and the ability to articulate and implement a vision and strategic direction for libraries in the rapidly changing information environment. The skills and qualities the successful candidate will bring to the role include:

  • Significant and progressive library administrative experience;
  • An understanding of the myriad and complex challenges facing the 21st century research library;
  • Strong managerial skill, including budget oversight;
  • Proven capacity to effectively lead library faculty and staff and initiate innovative projects in an academic or research library;
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully and collegially in a collaborative environment with university leadership, faculty, staff, and students from culturally diverse backgrounds;
  • Commitment to professional development and to encouraging the growth of talented library faculty and staff;
  • Willingness to actively participate in fundraising and donor engagement efforts;
  • Knowledge of assessment tools and use of data to evaluate programs and services;
  • An understanding of the major challenges facing academic research libraries with multiple constituencies in academic colleges, professional schools, and academic medical centers preferred;
  • A Masters or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited program or international equivalent is required, with a second advanced degree preferred.

UVM is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching, and/or service.
