Strategic Skills for Success: An ARL-ACRL Institute on Scholarly Communication Workshop

The Institute on Scholarly Communication (ISC), a coordinated effort by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), is hosting a two-day workshop, “Increasing the Effectiveness of Your Scholarly Communication Program: Strategic Skills for Success,” April 9–10, 2013, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

In the tradition of other ISC events, this workshop will emphasize active learning and hands-on work by participants, both individually and in groups. Throughout the workshop, participants will have structured opportunities to reflect on how to apply what they are learning to strategic planning within their own institution, to share information and test ideas with other workshop participants, and to begin developing skills to influence campus colleagues.

Audience

The workshop is appropriate for anyone responsible for developing and implementing a scholarly communication program at their institution. We encourage teams from the same institution to attend together. Participants should already possess a working knowledge of scholarly communication issues. Your library should already have a scholarly communication program, and you can articulate its goals. Alumni of other ARL-ACRL Institute on Scholarly Communication events as well as those who have participated in the ACRL Roadshow workshops are encouraged to attend, as the content of this workshop will not replicate, but rather build on, those past experiences.

Hotel

The ARL-ACRL Institute on Scholarly Communication workshop will be held at the Indiana Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis. Registrants who are not also going to the ACRL 2013 Conference may use the workshop housing reservation form [PDF].

The Institute on Scholarly Communication is jointly sponsored by the Association of Research Libraries and the Association of College and Research Libraries to promote the development of library-led outreach on scholarly communication issues. Hundreds of institute alumni form a community that provides peer support and professional sharing of information relating to campus outreach. The institute’s signature event is an immersive learning experience that prepares participants as local experts within their libraries and provides a structure for developing a program plan for scholarly communication outreach that is customized for each participant’s institution. The institute is on the web at https://www.arl.org/focus-areas/scholarly-communication/institute-on-scholarly-communication.

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) is a nonprofit organization of 125 research libraries in the US and Canada. Its mission is to influence the changing environment of scholarly communication and the public policies that affect research libraries and the diverse communities they serve. ARL pursues this mission by advancing the goals of its member research libraries, providing leadership in public and information policy to the scholarly and higher education communities, fostering the exchange of ideas and expertise, facilitating the emergence of new roles for research libraries, and shaping a future environment that leverages its interests with those of allied organizations. ARL is on the web at https://www.arl.org/.

ACRL is a division of the American Library Association (ALA), representing more than 12,000 academic and research librarians and interested individuals. ACRL is the only individual membership organization in North America that develops programs, products and services to meet the unique needs of academic and research librarians. Its initiatives enable the higher education community to understand the role that academic libraries play in the teaching, learning and research environments. ACRL is on the web at http://www.acrl.org/, Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/ala.acrl, and Twitter at @ala_acrl.
