Six fellows have been chosen to participate in the 2016 cohort of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) Career Enhancement Program (CEP). Funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and ARL member libraries, this program provides master of library and information science (MLIS) students from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups with hands-on experience in research libraries. The ARL Career Enhancement Program reflects the commitment of ARL members to create a diverse research library workforce that will better meet the challenges of changing demographics and global perspectives in education and research.

Participants in the 2016 cohort will benefit from a paid internship in an ARL member library, mentoring by a professional librarian at the host institution, support for attendance at and participation in the ARL Annual Leadership Symposium, and career placement assistance.

Former Career Enhancement Program fellow Hanni Nabahe remarked on her experience as part of the 2015 cohort, “The CEP internship expanded my skills, widened my network, provided me with a nurturing mentor, and granted me membership into a supportive and caring family of peers. Through this opportunity, ARL opened windows to a world I did not know existed and my professional goals seem more attainable because of this experience.”

The 2016 cohort will kick off their participation in the program at the ARL Annual Leadership Symposium, to be held during the American Library Association (ALA) Midwinter Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, January 2016, and will complete their internships throughout the winter/spring term.
