Be honest: Do you hear people use the term “innovation” without fully appreciating what it entails? Do you wish there were a way to distinguish “innovation-speak” from actual, sustainable innovation?

At the ARL President’s Institute in February 2026 (ARL PI26), Lee Vinsel, associate professor of science, technology, and society at Virginia Tech, will help foster realistic conversations around necessary changes to truly unlock innovation.

Preview Lee’s talk, “Innovation Delusion: The Folly of Innovation-Speak and the Need for Actual Innovation.”

About the ARL President’s Institute

The ARL President’s Institute provides opportunities for participation by ARL member institutions and others in our field each year during the start of the ARL presidency. One of the ARL Institutes, this interactive event convenes a broad community of individuals, subject-matter experts, middle managers, senior leaders, and general executives from ARL libraries and beyond on top-of-mind issues facing research libraries. As part of the President’s Institute, the Julia C. Blixrud Scholarship recipient is selected, attends, and writes a report on the institute to be published by ARL. For questions, please email events@arl.org.
