The ARL Advocacy and Public Policy Committee is sponsoring a virtual ARL member session on the University of California’s (UC) new Project LEND (Library Expansion of Networked Delivery) on Friday, February 10, at 1:00 p.m.–2:00 p.m. EST. This member session is open to ARL member representatives as well as one or two individuals from each member library, invited by the member representative.
Project LEND is a two-year large-scale research effort to investigate the potential for expanded lawful use of digitized books held by academic and research libraries. The project, supported by a $1.1 million grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, is led by Rice Majors, associate university librarian for scholarly resources at UC Davis; Erik Mitchell, the Audrey Geisel University Librarian at UC San Diego; and Günter Waibel, associate vice provost and executive director of the California Digital Library. The Project LEND team includes copyright and technical experts from UC and HathiTrust, advised by a Library Community Group of senior leaders from academic libraries outside UC. The research effort is informed by existing models, including controlled digital lending, and draws on UC’s experience with such pandemic-era programs as HathiTrust’s Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS).
In this ARL member session, Majors, Mitchell, Waibel, and Mike Furlough, executive director of HathiTrust, will provide an overview of Project LEND and its goals before opening up the meeting for questions and discussion. The discussion will cover how ARL member libraries are thinking about digital book access, and how Project LEND’s research might inform a US national strategy on these issues.
