Funders develop a unique perspective on trends and priorities in their fields by working closely with grantees, understanding capacity needs and constraints, and engaging in deep discussions with other funders. During the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) Membership Meeting in December 2022, leaders from foundations and federal agencies shared their insights on trends and priorities in higher education, the humanities, and the US scientific enterprise. In the video of their one-hour session, “Update from Funders: Priorities and Trends,” you will hear from:

  • Martin Halbert, Science Advisor for Public Access, US National Science Foundation (NSF)
  • Robert Hanisch, Director, Office of Data and Informatics within the Material Measurement Laboratory, US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
  • Terri Taylor, Strategy Director for Innovation and Discovery, Lumina Foundation
  • Brett Bobley, Chief Information Officer, Director of Office of Digital Humanities, US National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH)
  • Patricia Hswe, Program Officer for Public Knowledge, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
  • Darrell Meadows, Deputy Executive Director and Director for Publications Projects, National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) at the US National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)

In their talks, panelists share their views on potential opportunities to expand our current networks, and design strategies to address systemic risks to democracy and social justice. Listen for insights into the questions that US federal science agencies are considering as they implement US science policy, such as public-access requirements and significant new investments in research funding. You will also hear about novel approaches to equitable grant-making, and new grant programs.

ARL is grateful to the panelists for their time and expertise, and to CNI for this platform.
