The University of Iowa Libraries collaborates on a campus-wide social justice video project

In the spring of 2016, the University of Iowa (UI) Libraries is collaborating with University of Iowa Office of Outreach and Engagement and the Office of Teaching, Learning, and Technology to produce a campus-wide video project called Talk About Just Living. This project is part of the Just Living Theme Semester, which focuses on issues of social justice.

Using the Libraries’ new One Button Studios, University of Iowa students, faculty, staff, and members of the surrounding community are invited to use the libraries’ video studios to record themselves speaking about what social justice means to them. Participants can submit their recordings to become a part of a series of videos for the Just Living Theme Semester. At the end of the semester, the videos will be compiled, cataloged, and available to all as part of the UI Libraries’ Iowa Digital Library.

The Libraries’ Just Living video project is designed as a tool instructors across disciplines can use to infuse social justice elements into their spring courses and to give their students experience interacting with digital media.

Throughout the semester, the University of Iowa Libraries is hosting events to help participants craft their social justice statements and use the studio to record them. Participants who come to an event will have an opportunity to:

  • Discuss social justice topics
  • Learn about upcoming Just Living events and activities
  • Learn how to use the video recording studio
  • Get tips on speaking from the university’s Speaking Center
  • Receive a free USB drive to use as they record their video
