How to Run a Value Proposition Exercise in Your Library: A Free ARL Webinar

M.J. D’EliaHow do faculty perceive your library? What do campus administrators expect from you? What about students and other campus constituencies? The truth is, different segments of your community need different combinations of products and services. How can libraries anticipate, articulate, and implement those solutions in ways that make sense to the user? The 2015 ARL Library Liaison Institute held at Cornell University included “value proposition” exercises and conversations to help liaison librarians prototype and test value propositions to answer these questions, challenge existing assumptions, and build better strategic alignment with their users and institutions.

Many ARL member libraries have indicated an interest in locally replicating these value proposition exercises. To help them and other interested libraries facilitate such conversations about value propositions, the Association is offering a free 90-minute webinar on Thursday, May 19, at 2:00 p.m. eastern daylight time.

This webinar will walk you through how to ensure the success of value proposition conversations in your library. You will learn how to:

  • Select customer segments
  • Build customer profiles
  • Map products and services to customer segments
  • Articulate multiple value proposition statements
  • Test statements with customers

Participants will receive a Facilitator’s Toolkit in advance of the webinar.

About the Speaker

M.J. D’Elia facilitated the 2015 ARL Library Liaison Institute, and regularly facilitates workshops on business models, value propositions, design thinking, and creative problem solving. An ARL Leadership Fellow in the 2016–2017 cohort, he manages the Learning and Curriculum Support Team at the University of Guelph Library, and teaches an introductory course on the entrepreneurial mind-set for the College of Business, where students learn practices, habits, and tools used by serial entrepreneurs.
