Wednesday, May 15 @ 2:00 pm3:00 pm

On Wednesday, May 15, at 2:00 p.m. eastern daylight time, please join ARL’s Advocacy and Public Policy Committee (APPC) for a member session on traditional knowledge (TK) and traditional cultural expressions (TCE).

Rina Pantalony, director of Copyright Advisory Services at Columbia University Libraries, will discuss her new paper, “Stewarding Collections in Times of Changing Perspectives: How Traditional Knowledge and Traditional Cultural Expressions Can Facilitate Preservation and Access,” published in the Journal of Copyright in Education and Librarianship (JCEL). Pantalony discusses the relationship between TCE, TK, and western intellectual property regimes; models for cultural heritage institutions and communities to engage in collaborative stewardship; and forthcoming World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) guidance on this issue.

Pantalony will be joined by Sara Benson, copyright librarian and associate professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, who will talk about her work on a survey on traditional cultural expression.

APPC has invited Nancy Weiss, Kaminstein Scholar in Residence at the US Copyright Office, as a special guest to listen in on the member session. Weiss’s role focuses on advancing scholarship, engagement, and research on the protection, preservation, access to, and use of diverse forms of traditional cultural expressions.
