ARL Annual Report Highlights Community Resilience in 2025

ARL Annual Report 2025

2025 tested research libraries in ways both familiar and newly unsettling. Across higher education, government, and civic life, trust in institutions fell to historic lows, resources became even more constrained, and the pace of technological, political, and social change was unrelenting. For the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and our members, these pressures were tangible—forcing difficult budget decisions, heightening scrutiny of collections and services, and increasing uncertainty around access to public data and the scientific record.

Through it all, ARL supported its members as they continued their daily work supporting research communities, maneuvering users around misinformation and disinformation, pushing against the polarization and politicization of academic research, and navigating the rapid technological changes driven by AI.

If there is a single word that captures 2025 for ARL and its members, it is resilience.

In spite of profound challenges for leaders, ARL members advanced the mission of the Association through their mentorship and sponsorship of emerging leaders; their service on the Board, committees, working groups, and task forces shaping policy and the knowledge ecosystem; and their participation in community groups, Association Meetings, AI workshops, and learning institutes.

The year behind us offers reason for optimism. Research libraries are innovating, investing, and embracing their role as trusted stewards of knowledge. ARL will continue to stand with you—convening, informing, shaping, and influencing—so that together we can strengthen the communities we serve.
