Yale University has named Barbara Rockenbach the next Stephen F. Gates ’68 University Librarian, effective July 1, 2020, pending the approval of the Board of Trustees.

Rockenbach, a former ARL Leadership Fellow (2013–2015), is currently the associate university librarian for research and learning at Columbia University. Prior to joining Columbia in 2011, she served at Yale as the director of undergraduate and library research education and as an instructional services librarian for the Arts Library. She has also worked for JSTOR and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

At Yale, Rockenbach will succeed Susan Gibbons, who was appointed Yale’s vice provost for collections and scholarly communications in July 2019 and has continued to lead the libraries during the search for a new university librarian. Gibbons has served as university librarian since 2011 and received a second appointment as deputy provost for collections and scholarly communications in 2016.

To learn more about Rockenbach and her appointment, see the April 15, 2020, Yale news release, “Barbara Rockenbach Appointed Yale’s Next University Librarian.”
