At the beginning of the fall semester, the Georgetown University community will welcome Alexia Hudson-Ward as their university librarian and dean of the library. Her appointment coincides with the retirement of Harriette Hemmasi, who served seven years in the post.

Alexia, hailing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, began her academic career at Temple University with a passion in librarianship, but began her post-collegiate journey as a jazz reporter for the Philadelphia Tribune—the oldest continuously operating African American newspaper in the United States—and then as a marketing manager for a soft drink company.

She ultimately found her way back to her passion, earning her MLIS at the University of Pittsburgh and then her doctorate in library and information science from Simmons University.

Her career includes roles as associate librarian at Pennsylvania State University, director of libraries for Oberlin College, and then at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where she led research and learning services around the libraries’ AI strategy.

We welcome and congratulate Alexia on her appointment. For a full view of Alexia’s career, view the announcement from Georgetown University.
