The American Library Association (ALA) has selected John Wilkin, the Juanita J. and Robert E. Simpson Dean of Libraries and university librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, as the 2019 winner of the Hugh C. Atkinson Memorial Award. Wilkin will receive the award at the ALA Annual Conference in Washington, DC, this summer.
Named in honor of one of the earliest leaders of library automation, the Hugh Atkinson Award recognizes an academic librarian who has made significant contributions in the area of library automation or management and has made notable improvements in library services or research.
“John Price Wilkin exemplifies the spirit of the Hugh C. Atkinson Memorial Award through leadership, risk taking, and innovation,” said Bruce Johnson, chair of the award committee and former senior library information systems specialist at the Library of Congress.
Wilkin is a member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) Working Group on Transformation at Scale and the ARL Digital Scholarship Institute Advisory Group. He served on the ARL Board of Directors in 2014–2017 in addition to serving on several ARL committees, the Innovation Lab Design Team, and the Membership Task Force since 2014.
