The University of Michigan has appointed Lisa R. Carter as university librarian and dean of libraries, effective May 1, 2023.

Carter is currently vice provost for libraries and university librarian at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. At UW–Madison, Carter created a clear, compelling direction and vision for the libraries’ alignment with the university’s strategic framework. She worked with campus leadership and library staff to leverage resources for maximum value to the university, to the state, and to scholars worldwide. Carter chairs the UW–Madison Libraries Coordinating Council and serves on the chancellor’s leadership council, the provost’s executive group, and the iSchool advisory council.

Before joining the University of Wisconsin, Carter held library leadership positions at The Ohio State University, North Carolina State University, and the University of Kentucky. She received her bachelor of arts degree in interdisciplinary humanities from Michigan State University and a master of information and library studies degree from the University of Michigan.

Within the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), Carter has served on several committees and advisory groups. She is the 2022–2025 ARL representative to the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) Steering Committee and is currently a member of the ARL Learning Network Committee and the Association Meeting Program Planning Task Force. She served as chair of the ARL Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee in 2020–2021. Carter was also an ARL visiting program officer in 2009–2014 and an ARL Leadership Fellow in 2007–2008.

At the University of Michigan (U-M), Carter will succeed James Hilton, who stepped down from his library role on June 30, 2022, after leading the U-M Library since September 2013. Donna L. Hayward has been serving as interim university librarian and dean of libraries since July 1, 2022.
