Mary M. Case, university librarian and dean of libraries at University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and past president of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), has been named the 2018 winner of the Ross Atkinson Lifetime Achievement Award. The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) will present the award to Case at the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, on June 28, 2018. The award, sponsored by EBSCO Information Services, honors the memory of Ross Atkinson, a library leader, author, and scholar whose service to ALCTS and the library community-at-large serves as a model for those in the field.

Case has a longstanding relationship with the Association of Research Libraries. She served as director of the ARL Office of Scholarly Communication from 1996 to 2004, during which time she helped found SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition), a leading advocate in the open access movement. Case has been university librarian at the University of Illinois at Chicago since 2004 and has been active as UIC’s member representative to ARL. She has served as ARL president, as well as chair of the Association’s Finance Committee, Membership Committee, Financial Strategies Task Force, and Fair Use Working Group.
