Memorial: Dale M. Bentz, 1919–2017

Dale Bentz

Dale M. Bentz, university librarian at the University of Iowa from 1970 to 1986, died in Iowa City, Iowa, on June 25, 2017, at age 98. Bentz held positions at the University of Tennessee, University of North Carolina, and Duke University before joining the University of Iowa in 1953 as associate director of libraries. He served as the University of Iowa’s representative to the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) beginning in 1982, upon the retirement of Leslie Dunlap as dean of library administration. Bentz retired in 1986.

Bentz was active in the profession, serving as president of the Iowa Library Association in 1959–1960, in several capacities with the American Library Association, and as a member of the ARL Coordinating Committee on Collections and Access in 1984–1985.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 8, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bentz’s memory to the University of Iowa Libraries c/o University of Iowa Foundation or to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Iowa City.
