Hannelore Rader, former dean of University Libraries at University of Louisville (UofL), died on April 25, 2024, at the age of 86.

Hannelore served as dean at UofL from 1997 to her retirement in 2009. Under her leadership, UofL joined the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) in 2002. At UofL, she oversaw the Ekstrom Library wing addition and renovation of the main floors of Ekstrom and Kornhauser libraries, the installation of a robotic retrieval system that keeps books easily at hand instead of stored offsite, and the development of the Learning Commons to provide better services for students.

Before joining UofL, Hannelore was the director of the University Library at Cleveland State University, the director of the Library/Learning Center at the University of Wisconsin–Parkside, and held several library positions at Eastern Michigan University. She was a leader in the profession, who served as a role model to many and mentored countless young people throughout her career.

In ARL, Hannelore was an active member representative, serving on several committees including the ARL Research, Teaching, and Learning Steering Committee; the Diversity Committee; and the Transforming Library Roles in Research, Teaching, and Learning Steering Committee.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 11, 1:00 p.m.–2:00 p.m., at Walton Funeral Home, 2701 Holland Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia. To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Hannelore, please visit Walton Funeral Home Tribute Store.
