William Carl Highfill, dean of libraries at Auburn University from 1973 to 1995, passed away at the age of 77 on July 10, 2013, in Opelika, Alabama. Under Highfill’s leadership the libraries’ collections almost tripled in size, the Ralph Brown Draughon Library doubled in size through a building addition completed in 1991, and Auburn became the 120th member of ARL in 1992. Prior to his time at Auburn, Highfill served as director of libraries at East Texas State University.

Highfill was active in the profession, notably as a founding member of the Network of Alabama Academic Libraries and the Southeastern Library Network. He was president of the American Library Association (ALA) in 1979–1980 and he served on the ARL Statistics and Measurement Committee from 1993 to 1995.
