ARL President's Institute: Ignite Collaboration: Thriving Multigenerational Libraries, February 12–13, Chicago-Rosemont, ILLand the plane!

What?

(Translation: Get to the point!)

Does this sound familiar? Do you find yourself just trying to stay fresh—ugh—that’s dated and reveals a lot about you. Or, are you sandwiched between library patrons, employees you supervise, and a supervisor who you don’t think quite gets it? Unleash the potential of your library by embracing the strengths of every generation!

All libraries experience this, whether they are public, academic, museum, or otherwise special. Everyone can “hang out” at the 2025 ARL President’s Institute to dive into the ways multigenerational perspectives and practices can boost a library’s inclusivity and effectiveness.

Experience an immersive workshop-style experience over two days, presented by the ARL Learning Network: Ignite Collaboration: Thriving Multigenerational Libraries, February 12–13, 2025, in Chicago-Rosemont, Illinois.

This dynamic program will explore shared leadership practices, innovative strategies to bridge generational divides, and practical tools to promote cross-mentorship.

Facilitators will create a space to connect, solve problems, and share best practices with fellow library leaders. Participants will leave with resources and a plan for how to bring multigenerational collaboration to their research libraries.

ARL Vice President/President-Elect Rhea Ballard-Thrower said:

Our role isn’t just about leading research libraries, it’s about cultivating a future where everyone thrives. We want to empower leaders to bridge generational divides, unlock the collective wisdom of our research communities, and encourage curiosity and joy. The 2025 ARL President’s Institute will equip us with practical tools to mentor, develop, laugh, and share knowledge across ages.

About the President’s Institute

The President’s Institute seeks to provide opportunities for participation by ARL member institutions and others in our field each year during the start of the ARL presidency. One of the ARL Institutes, this interactive event convenes a broad community of individuals, subject-matter experts, middle managers, senior leaders, and general executives from ARL libraries and beyond on top-of-mind issues facing research libraries. As part of the President’s Institute, the Julia C. Blixrud Scholarship recipient is selected, attends, and writes a report on the institute to be published by ARL.
