OCLC Research recently interviewed ARL’s Judy Ruttenberg, a member of the SHARE Operations Team, to supplement the report The Evolving Scholarly Record. The report presents a framework that describes the types of material the scholarly record potentially encompasses, as well as the various stakeholder roles associated with the creation, management, and use of the scholarly record. SHARE—a higher education initiative whose mission is to maximize research impact by making a comprehensive inventory of research widely accessible, discoverable, and reusable—hopes to use this framework to lead discussions about “further embedding librarians in the research process” and about the kind of data SHARE should collect.
To fulfill its mission SHARE is creating an openly available data set about research activities across their life cycle. In April 2015, SHARE launched a public beta of its first project, SHARE Notify, which generates a normalized feed of research release events—such as posting a preprint to a disciplinary repository, depositing a data set into a data repository, publishing a peer-reviewed article—from diverse sources and with varied schema. SHARE Notify will enable all stakeholders to have the information necessary to improve their workflows for tracking research outcomes, outputs, and impact.
In the OCLC Research interview, “Embed Your Library in the Research Process,” Ruttenberg said, “Librarians need to be more involved in the process of scholarship, not just collecting its output.” She noted, “We’ll need to continue to think of those links with new kinds of partners that can help the library community make this transformation…The stakeholder ecosystem supports these shifting roles, which I think is great.”
Try SHARE Notify
Researchers, institutions, and the public can use and contribute to SHARE Notify in several ways:
- Search the SHARE Notify database to discover new research
- Subscribe to receive notifications of research release events
- Register to become a research metadata provider and make research more visible
SHARE is a partnership of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Association of American Universities (AAU), the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU), and the Center for Open Science (COS) and is funded, in part, by grants from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
