What is the future of small academic presses in the current scholarly communication ecosystem? Some of us oversee presses, and even more of us have cut back sharply on acquisitions. In the scholarly communication life cycle, many presses depend heavily on sales to libraries. What might happen to small scholarly publishers if library budgets can no longer support purchases from them? Are the challenges different for open access publishers than for revenue-based presses? For library directors who also oversee presses, how do we frame the value proposition of a press to the university, and what indicators do we use?
