The Move to Open Scholarship: Recommendations from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine; Association of American Universities; and Association of Public and Land-grant UniversitiesOn July 17, 2018, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine released the report Open Science by Design: Realizing a Vision for 21st Century Research on the pressing need to move forward towards a fully open, global environment for the sharing of data. Last November, AAU and APLU published a Public Access Working Group Report and Recommendations on the same topic. Alexa McCray and Kacy Redd will discuss highlights and recommendations from both of these reports and lead the group in a discussion on the role of universities and libraries in making public access possible. Research Libraries and the Inclusion ImperativeIn what ways will the demographics in the US and around the world change by 2050, and how should research libraries evolve to serve the needs of increasingly diverse constituencies? In addition to reminding us of the joy that can come from living and working among diverse people, Johnnetta Cole will present the moral necessity and the business case for greater diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion in research libraries. She will also address the current climate in ARL institutions as a reflection of what is going on in the United States and around the world. Moderator: Speaker: |

Designing and Leading Organizations in a Time of Constant ChangeWith the book Whiplash: How to Survive Our Faster Future and its nine principles providing the framework for this program session, Joi Ito and Chris Bourg will explore a series of opportunities and frictions in how we lead our organizations in a world of constant change. Citizen science outside of the academy, role clarity, and credibility of libraries with the scholarly record are just a few topics to be discussed. This informal exchange will also highlight the role of the Media Lab at MIT in encouraging idea creation, demonstration, and risk-taking. Moderator: Speaker: |

UnconferenceThis informal, iterative session is organized, structured, and led by ARL member representatives. The topics for this session were chosen via a survey disseminated several weeks before the meeting, and topic discussions are being facilitated by the 2018 Fall Association Meeting Planning Committee. Instead of passive listening, all attendees and organizers are encouraged to become participants, with discussion leaders providing moderation and structure for attendees. Join whichever topic suits you best based on interest or relevance. Moderator:
