Purpose

The Head of Music and Multimedia Resources coordinates operations of the Music and Multimedia Resources Cataloging Unit in original and complex copy cataloging of music scores, music sound recordings, moving image materials (music and additional subject areas), and other formats of related materials in all languages.  

Responsibilities

  • Manages the day-to-day work of the Music and Multimedia Resources Unit including establishing priorities and assigning work that ensures access to collections content via the timely creation of metadata in accordance with established methods and procedures. Establishes unit priorities and goals to ensure effective workflows and outcomes in a positive, productive, and efficient work environment. Recommends and implements new initiatives for describing and providing access to collections content in all formats. Ensures that unit staff receive proper training to complete assigned tasks. Develops effective unit policies, procedures, and workflows. Establishes and maintains excellent working relationships with other units and departments to resolve issues related to the description and/or access of collections materials.
  • Participates in professional activities associated with job functions. Serves on committees, task forces, and working groups related to departmental responsibilities. Provides and supports library outreach to various stakeholders through communication and collaboration.
 

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in library science or equivalent, with four or more years of relevant experience in libraries, cultural heritage organizations, academic settings, or other types of organizations in a field with transferable skills and competencies.
  • Two or more years of cataloging experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide strong leadership and management while working collaboratively in an environment of continuous change.
  •  Knowledge of cataloging and classification rules and skills in applying cataloging standards and schema..
  • Awareness of current and emerging practices regarding metadata creation.
  • Experience with an integrated library system.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment that values diverse perspectives on a team and in the workplace.
  Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.  

Preferred Qualifications

  • Music degree or demonstrated knowledge of music genres.
  • Experience with a national cooperative cataloging program such as PCC (NACO, BIBCO, SACO, or CONSER).
  • Experience with non-MARC metadata schemas.
  • Experience using the Alma library services platform.
  • Bibliographic knowledge of one or more non-English languages.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, introduce, and manage change.
  • Ability to contribute to a thoughtful, expressive environment, with a group of team leaders working together to create a constructive, open-minded, and innovative learning community.
