Metadata Librarian & Electronic Resources Cataloger

See required qualifications for more information on classification level requirements. The University of Iowa Libraries seeks an innovative and collaborative librarian for the newly created Metadata Librarian & Electronic Resources Cataloger. Reporting to the Director of Cataloging-Metadata, this person will provide high quality metadata for a vast array of digital collections and electronic resources and serve as the department contact for e-resources inquiries and database maintenance issues. 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  • Working closely with the Metadata Production Coordinator & Rare Materials Cataloger and the Digital Scholarship & Collections Librarian, participate in the development and implementation of metadata schemas and mapping, and manage access to and display of metadata in the library’s digital asset management database, Islandora.
  • Apply knowledge of metadata, taxonomies, and technical expertise to incorporate new content into Islandora and make improvements to existing content. Tasks may include description of materials, transformation of metadata, training of staff and student assistants in best practices related to metadata production and digital libraries, and reviewing the work of contributors to ensure that it adheres to relevant standards and procedures.
  • Review and, as needed, enhance cataloging of electronic resources including integrating resources, e-books, electronic journals, and licensed databases, according to established standards and national and local best practices. Perform complex copy or original cataloging for individual electronic resource titles as needed.
  • Working closely with staff in Acquisitions and Library IT, manage the metadata for the Libraries’ collection of subscription electronic resources. Develop and streamline procedures and workflows for electronic resources and resolve discovery and access problems arising from obsolete or incorrect information appearing in bibliographic records or portfolios.
  • Working with the Catalog Management Librarian and Library IT staff, manage some batchloading and maintenance of catalog records received from vendors. Use data-loading tools and batch processes and manage, prepare, and facilitate the loading of e-resource record sets into Alma, as well as perform bibliographic record maintenance.
  • Serve as a contact for public services staff with questions regarding access to electronic resources. Manage the troubleshooting and resolution of access issues to content in consultation with other library staff as needed.
  • Actively participate in the Cataloging-Metadata leadership team, contributing to department-level planning and the formulation of cataloging policies and procedures.
  • Keep abreast of developments in cataloging standards and trends, applying new rules, interpretations, and techniques as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the profession through service, research, publishing, and/or teaching.
  • Participate in and contribute to relevant library and University-wide activities and committees.
  • Represent the University Libraries in campus-wide and inter-institutional initiatives.
  • Actively supports the University of Iowa Libraries commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion (DEAI) in the workplace.
  • Additional job duties as assigned based on individual knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Science.
  • To be appointed at the Specialist Librarian classification: two or more years of related library experience and demonstrated interest in professional development that will enhance the candidate’s value to the Libraries, the University, the profession, or the scholarly community.
  • Experience cataloging in OCLC Connexion.
  • Knowledge of issues related to electronic resources cataloging.
  • Knowledge of RDA, LC-PCC PS, LCC, LCSH, LCGFT, LCDGT, LCMPT, and MARC21 formats, and familiarity with authority control and AACR2.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based setting where consultation, flexibility, collaboration, and cooperation are essential.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, access and inclusion in the workplace or community.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the mission of a research university and the mission and functions of a large research library.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Recent experience cataloging electronic resources.
  • Experience with the systems and tools used in the department including one or more of the following: Alma, Primo, Islandora.
  • Experience with XML and XSLT.
  • Experience with non-MARC metadata formats including Qualified DC, MODS, or EAD.
  • Familiarity with OCLC’s Collection Manager and Record Manager programs.
  • Familiarity with BIBFRAME and linked data, and a general understanding of transition paths from MARC to BIBFRAME.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Bibliographic knowledge of one or more languages in addition to English.
  • Successful completion of NACO training.

The Libraries will be filling this position at one of two levels. The Librarian classification salary range is $49,000 - $51,000, and the Specialist Librarian classification salary range is $52,500 - $65,000. You must indicate in your cover letter the level of classification (Librarian and/or Specialist Librarian) you wish to be considered for or indicate both.
