The NC State University Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Instruction and Outreach Librarian for Special Collections. The Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) collects, describes, preserves, and provides access to unique, rare, and historical information in support of the teaching, learning, and research mission of the NC State University community and beyond. Distinctive collections focus on areas such as the history of the university; agriculture and forestry; the history of computing and computer simulation; design; animal rights and animal welfare; veterinary medicine; zoological health; textiles; engineering; environmental justice; and rare books in related subject areas. The SCRC is innovating archival services and collections through digital collections, inventive projects, and user-focused services. The Instruction and Outreach Librarian for Special Collections collaborates with teaching faculty, librarians, and students to design and deliver innovative instructional and research services featuring rare books, manuscripts, archives, and other unique materials, across the full range of disciplines. The position will:
  • Explore new approaches in experiential teaching and learning to engage students in research and critical interpretation using special collections materials
  • Work closely with librarians and teaching faculty to design and lead course-embedded teaching collaborations, including instruction sessions and extracurricular workshops introducing students and other campus community members to special collections materials, critical archival literacy, and research skills 
  • Conduct outreach to the university community promoting access to and use of special collections materials in all formats 
  • Engage faculty, student organizations, and campus partners in opportunities to document and share the stories of historically marginalized individuals and groups at the university
  • Promote the work of the SCRC to engage campus communities in opportunities to contribute to reparative archival description and documenting marginalized community histories on campus
  • Collaborate with curators to identify and provide outreach support based on collection development priorities
  • Collaborate with Libraries colleagues and university partners on programs, events, and exhibits featuring special collections materials
The position deeply considers how their approach to their daily work reflects and advances the Libraries’ Strategic Plan, creating an environment and community that is welcoming for both patrons and colleagues alike. They participate in library planning and serve on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams. Librarians are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field. The position will report to the Lead Librarian for Outreach & Engagement. This position is based in North Carolina. This position is eligible for flexible hours with a hybrid work environment based on departmental and operational needs. This position will require frequent onsite work.
