The University of California (UC), Davis has selected William F. Garrity as its next university librarian and vice provost of digital scholarship, effective May 15, 2024.

Garrity has served as UC Davis deputy university librarian and chief operating officer since 2014, and as interim university librarian since the retirement of MacKenzie Smith in 2023.

An innovative and collaborative leader, Garrity has cultivated new, more flexible ways of working in the hybrid post-pandemic world—within the library, with library users, and with other parts of UC Davis and the 10-campus UC system.

Garrity is passionate about the critical role of the library as a “third space” that supports users’ academic and research success and sense of belonging on campus. He is also deeply committed to cultivating the library as a workplace built on mutual respect, transparency, and a can-do spirit.

“We thrive together,” Garrity said of his approach to his new role. “Our team’s success springs from deep integration in the fabric of our campus, strong relationships with campus leaders, and the combined power of the UC libraries.”

Prior to coming to UC Davis, Garrity held library and IT leadership positions at the University of Chicago, Dartmouth College, and the University of Pennsylvania.

In the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), he has served on the ARL Academy AUL Leadership Institute Task Force (2020), the Research and Analytics Committee (2017–2018), and the Assessment Visioning Task Force (2017).
